Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
|
|
|
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), was first developed in Brazil by the Gracie family during the mid-20th century. Originally based on the Japanese Martial Arts, Ryu Jiujitsu and Kano-Ryu Jiujitsu (Judo) it was brought to Brazil by Mitsuo Maeda. This is where it was transformed into the sport we know today. Techniques generally include all manner of unarmed combat (strikes, throws, locks, chokes, wrestling, etc.) and occasionally some weapons training.
Mitsuo Maeda, who was also known as Count Koma ("Count of Combat"). emigrated to Brazil in 1914. He was helped a great deal by the Brazilian politician Gastão Gracie, whose father George Gracie had emigrated to Brazil himself from Scotland. In gratitude for the assistance, Maeda taught jiu-jitsu to Gastao's son Carlos Gracie. Carlos in turn taught his brothers Osvaldo, Gastão Jr., Jorge, and Helio.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is primarily a ground-fighting art. Most techniques involve both fighters on the mat. There is a heavy emphasis on positional strategy and where each person's legs are. Positions are stable situations, from which a large variety of techniques are available to both fighters.
Belt ranks start at white belt, and progress through blue, purple, brown, and then black. It generally takes about 2-3 years of training multiple times per week to be promoted to the next belt rank. However, there is no formal rank test. Instead, rank is about the ability to apply jiu-jitsu techniques in a competitive match. A student generally needs to be able to reliably defeat most other students at a given rank in order to be promoted to the next rank.
Star Jiu Jitsu offers classes both small and large. Gi and no Gi instruction. Goals for non-competition participates’ as well as tournament coaching for a competition team. Jiu Jitsu offers a great work out for both men and woman. It is a great way to learn self-defense.

Muay Thai Kickboxing
|
|
|
Muay Thai or Thai Boxing is a self-defense technique that was developed and tested in battle by the ancient warriors of Thailand. It is the National Sport of Thailand.
There are five major components to Thai Boxing: (1) Punches, (2) Knees, (3) Elbows, (4) Clinching, and (5) Kicks.
Thai boxers do not earn belt colors typical of other Martial Art schools. Instead, Muay Thai practitioners test their skills in the ring or cage.
How does Muay Thai differ from other forms of kickboxing? For one, there is an effective use of knees and elbows. Another major difference between Muay Thai and other kickboxing styles is the Thai Roundhouse kick. It is a rear leg kick, drawing power from the hips, and striking it's target with the shins. The Thai kick is so effective that it is the only kick really used by Thai boxers in full-contact bouts.
Star Jiu Jitsu’s Muay Thai classes are combined with beginners and advanced students. Students are taught skills ranging from shadow boxing, heavy bag work , focus mitts with the instructor and other students, and light to heavy sparring.

Mixed Martial Arts is a full contact combat sport that
allows a wide variety of fighting techniques, from a mixture
of martial arts traditions and non-traditions to be used in
competitions. The rules allow the use of striking and
grappling techniques, both while standing and on the ground.
Such competitions allow martial artists of different
backgrounds to compete. Modern mixed martial arts
competition emerged in American popular culture in 1993 with
the founding of the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
Originally organized with the intention of finding the most
effective martial arts for real unarmed combat situations,
competitors of various arts were pitted against one another
with minimal rules for safety. In the following
decade, MMA promoters adopted many additional rules aimed at
increasing safety for the competitors and to promote
mainstream acceptance of the sport. The name "mixed
martial arts" was coined by one of the developers of these
rules, Jeff Blatnick, a former Greco-Roman wrestler and
Olympic gold medalist. |
